Per Johansson is a painter based in Gothenburg. His work explores the contemporary city through everyday situations, peripheral environments and the strange within the familiar.

His paintings often take place in housing estates, logistics landscapes, waiting rooms, industrial areas and other transitional spaces. These environments become settings for questions around memory, nostalgia and uncertainty, as well as the social, economic and technological changes shaping everyday life.

Johansson is particularly interested in forms of nostalgia that are not sentimental, but connected to traces of earlier ways of living, shifting ideas of progress and a sense of change that is both gradual and difficult to locate. Familiar situations can carry a subtle dissonance, moving between recognition, unease and ambiguity.

Working primarily with figurative oil painting, he uses ordinary places and behaviours as a way of approaching broader questions around contemporary life and the future. His background in architecture informs his sensitivity to space and scale, but remains secondary to the emotional and psychological atmosphere of the work.

Johansson is currently pursuing an MFA in Fine Art at HDK-Valand, University of Gothenburg.
